So you’ve picked out Honolulu as your vacation getaway this year, but beyond lying on the beach, what else should you do? Here at the ABC Auto Center, we have some solid input on how you can enhance your Honolulu experience.

Take your Oahu island vacation to the next level by visiting these 5 extraordinary Hawaiian locations:

1. Diamond Head

If the outdoors and hiking are your thing, then look no further than Diamond Head, the former volcano that is an iconic stop for Honolulu visitors. The hike to reach the top is open to the public and is about a mile long. It generally takes about 30-45 minutes to reach the summit, which is certainly workable into your vacation itinerary. Sporting some of the most breathtaking views in all of Hawaii, this is definitely a stop you won’t want to miss.

2. Hanauma Bay

As one of the best places to snorkel on the entire island, this nature reserve and marine sanctuary is located on the east side of Honolulu. The bay itself is interesting due to the fact that it is sunken into a crater and is surrounded by beautiful sand. For a small entrance fee, you and your family can take the short hike to the beach and begin your snorkeling adventure.

3. Honolulu Zoo

Everyone loves a zoo day! Located on the east side of Waikiki is the Honolulu Zoo. This zoo is home to many animals that are native to tropical climates, so you’ll get a chance to see some of nature’s coolest creatures that you otherwise wouldn’t in stateside zoos. Between the animal exhibits, you can also take in the different Hawaiian plants, trees, and flowers located in some of the tropical gardens.

4. Waikiki Aquarium

Just down the street from the zoo, the Waikiki Aquarium is a great place to take your children to learn about the local marine life. A fan favorite of this destination that you are sure to enjoy is the Hawaiian monk seals, which are guaranteed to bring some playfulness into your visit.

Being that they’re so close to each other, pairing the Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Aquarium into a day trip is an excellent way to get the most out of your time in Hawaii.

5. Pearl Harbor, USS Arizona Memorial

A tragic piece of American history, Pearl Harbor is home to the December 7th, 1941 attack on US naval ships. This event is what ushered the US into World War II.

Upon arrival, you’ll be shown a short video on the history of the location that explains the significance and gives some weight to the memorial. This is a great chance for children to learn about this important time in US history. After the video, you’ll be taken on a ferry ride out to a platform that is situated above the sunken ship. You’ll have enough time to take it all in and pay respect to those whom we lost.
