Where to Stay
Most visitors stay in Waikiki. It’s famous, gorgeous, and well-supplied with fabulous restaurants and resorts. But for a bit of tranquility away from the crowds, we recommend heading up the east coast to Ka’a’awa or Kailua. These towns are small but stunning, and are just a stone’s throw away from Honolulu.
Beaches to Visit
To see some of Oahu’s most gorgeous, undeveloped beaches, drive up to the North Shore. Mokule’ia Beach Park offers some of the best surf and sand on the North Shore. The beach is long and sandy, with a shallow reef that is great for snorkeling and fishing during the summer months. Mokule’ia, unlike many of the beaches on the North Shore, also has a large parking area, picnic tables, restrooms, and a local campground if you decide to stay a while.
Best Snorkeling and Boating
The leeward side of the island is rarely visited by tourists, and is therefore a great place for privacy and experiencing nature. The Wai’anae Small Boat Harbor houses several tour operators, including catamaran tours and snorkeling expeditions. If you want to swim with wild dolphins, Wai’anae is the place to go.
Hiking
While there are plenty of hiking opportunities on Oahu, the Koloa Gulch waterfall hike is one of our favorites. This is an 8-mile round trip hike that ends at a gorgeous waterfall. While there are no major ascents on this trail, it is quite strenuous as you will traverse streams and rocky terrain. But we promise, the lush scenery and the 100-foot waterfall at the end are worth the effort.
