Formed within a volcanic cone, Hanauma Bay has been home to a unique marine life ecosystem and its vibrant beauty for thousands of years. After World War II, the bay became a popular tourist destination and over the years suffered significant human damage due to misuse and overuse. In 1967, Hanauma Bay was designated a Marine Protected Area and is now both a Nature Preserve and a Marine Life Conservation District.
The bay is a snorkelers’ paradise. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced snorkeler, this is the place for you. Hundreds of fish and other marine life teem the coral reefs of the crescent area; their stunning colors make even the most beautiful rainbow pale in comparison. You can swim, picnic, or sunbathe on the beach as well.
Every year, over one million people visit the beach. Visitor hours are from 6 am to 6 pm daily, except Tuesday when the park is closed to allow the fish to feed uninterrupted. Admission is $7.50; parking is $1. We recommend arriving as early in the day as possible, so you can beat the crowds. For an easy way to make your way to the bay, we recommend using a van, SUV, or car rental. You can arrive and leave when you want, which gives you the freedom you need to really enjoy the day.
